In the beginning thought process of making this shelf, I had completely different expectations on how this project would go. Making this shelf was a lengthy process but in the end the result was much better than I predicted. Making the molds with clay sounded like the best way to make the molds of an octopus. However, using oil clay was much tougher than I had anticipated. After making three of the octopi. And making sure my molds were tightly closed made the pouring of the aluminum go very well. The refining process of the octopi proved to be a challenged even though aluminum is a very soft metal, grinding large portions of aluminum can be quite difficult. After many hours of grinding, I realized that the original idea of the shelf structure would not properly support the shape of the octopi. After re-drawing the shape of the shelf and writing out measurements made it is easier to picture the shelf in its finished form. After some wood cutting and sanding, I was able to glue and nail the pieces together. Once dried I was able to apply color to all the pieces which is my favorite part. After spray painting the pieces with many shades of blue and the octopi being yellow. I was able to add finishing touches like tap and dyeing the octopi so that they are able to screw into the shelves. Also adding a net-like fabric to the shelf gives a more ocean feel which I enjoyed.
