metal casting 1.0
metal casting!
The objective for this metal casting assignment is combining cast metal and a surface (metal, wood, glass, plexi.., create a "shelf' that integrates cast metal bracket/s or legs to hold up the surface.
some question to think about while doing this project.
Will my shelf take advantage of a unique architectural feature?
Is it designed to hold a unique object?
Will my bracket/s be traditional or contemporary?
How will it attach to the shelving and the wall?
Will the shelving be straight or will I bend or create angles?
design plans for metal casting molds
This is the design plan for my molds. I plan to make three octopi that will be placed under the wood that would be the shelf. I made little notes for myself so I know to cut the wood at an angle before I put it together to fit properly. each octopi is made with oil clay. in the back of these molds there is a crevice dug into it for hanging.
While working on this project I have done some artist research on Ashley Hope Carlisle. Ashley came into art as a graphic designer. As time went on she has to take other courses and she wasn’t sure about what she really wanted to do. As she was getting in to metal work it was difficult for her because she had different treatment because she was a girl. I chose Ashley because I can relate to her coming into art not knowing what you gravitate towards the most. and her experience of going through experimental medias and pin pointing which one works best for her. Especially because she wanted to make people around her like her father happy but in the end she discovered what was right for her. I am interested in her interest in nature and how she displays it. she focuses a lot on seeds and blooming. She makes it known that she loves the art mother nature provides which i agree with and would like to put more of it into my work.
I made two molds to hold my octopi. this is the second one which contains two octopus. once this sets I will turn it over and talc, sand, and carve keys into the other side to be ready for top half of the sand mold.
This is the first mold flipped and sanded. I carved keys into this side already and added talc so it can be ready for the second packing of sand.
One of the pieces that I find interesting especially with the objective of this project is this piece titles "cradle" . this actually reminds me of this project because it somewhat resembles a shelf and the metal casting is so intriguing and the form she got has me questioning how her mold was set up in order to get that shape.
