100 objects 1.0
description of assignment:
Select/make/find/invent 100 (at least 100) of the same object to communicate a concept that surfaces from the object itself. Develop an installation that supports the concept and helps a viewer to focus on the repeated object. Each object brings to your artwork an idea. With this project, examine how visual repetition affects the concept and the object. You may add other materials for execution. Plus, you may use any necessary materials for display purposes that do not affect the concept (ie. Nails or hang a frame). The 100 objects must be essentially identical.
some concepts that I have developed as I work with my objects:
as I am working with my objects I have decided to make a bust shape with the straws. The straws must be stacked and put together one layer at a time. At first, I was using glue however After further consideration, I have decided to use tape instead, that way the use of the straws is still there also putting the sculpture together with taped layers may be a better option. Each layer will be taped in place and on each tape layer I will write a number in which they are stacked. This will also allow me to unassemble the straws and reassemble them easily.
to further help with this project I researched an artist:
I chose Ernesto Neto to research. Ernesto is a conceptual artist from Brazil. The installations that he does allows the viewers to interact with the art. He explores the boundaries of the social and physical spaces through interactive structures. Ernesto is very interested in the sensual body and how it works. I chose this artist because I personally enjoy having sensory objects to touch, see, and hear. Many of Ernesto’s pieces look very intriguing to look at and to touch. I believe that I would personally enjoy the sensory play in his work. He also uses a wide range of colors which I love. The way that he fills up the space with some of his pieces makes me want to walk around them and see them up close as close as possible. The first piece I enjoyed was NEM TUDO SÃO FLORES , 2004-https://www.artnet.com/WebServices/images/ll00634lldbGbJFgneECfDrCWvaHBOc64pF/ernesto-neto-nem-tudo-s%C3%A3o-flores.jpg I liked this one because the purple color and because it looks like really heavy pillows that are suspended in the air. Another on that I enjoyed was PAFF, turmeric 1997-https://www.artnet.com/WebServices/images/ll00338lld6MYGFgZj4G3CfDrCWvaHBOcetQC/ernesto-neto-paff,-turmeric.jpg. This one reminded me of dough but in motion. It also reminded me of a busted sandbag but a squishy one. If this artist had this assignment, I would assume that he would likely use 100 nets with some kind of material inside them like the ones I enjoyed. I would imagine they would be suspended in the air in a single room with many colors in each net and some hanging lower than others.
CHANGE OF PLANS…..
September 13, 2024
After some further consideration, I have decided to go with what I know. Sometimes, trying something new does not always work out. In this case, straws are not my friend. In the past, I have grown fond of crocheting, and it has been something that compliments my work well. The straws were giving me trouble with the connection. I could not figure out how to connect them discreetly without obvious signs of connection like glue or tape. Therefore, I think it would be in my best interest to change my material. Something I can always count on, which is yarn!
material: plastic straw (black)
material: plastic straw (multi-colored)
some work in progress( when i decided maybe tape would be better instead of glue)
